Working to preserve and ensure access to government information

REGP- what we do

The Rare and Endangered Government Publications (REGP) committee seeks to:

• Identify rare, unique and/or endangered government publications, in all formats and from all levels of government;

• Evaluate materials for preservation and conservation; and

• Plan programs and workshops on the preservation of these materials.

Federal Agencies Digital Guidelines Initiative (FADGI)

FADGI is a collaborative effort started in 2007 by federal agencies to articulate common sustainable practices and guidelines for digitized and born digital historical, archival and cultural content. Two working groups study issues specific to two major areas, Still Image and Audio-Visual.

What are at risk materials?

At risk materials fall under multiple categories:

  • Materials that are uncommon due to age, small print runs, or are ephemeral
  • Fragile materials that require careful handeling (acidic paper, weak binding, deteriorating microformat)
  • Materials that are in an obscure or obsolete format
  • Information in a digital format not maintained/saved in a secondary site

The preservation policy has as its goal, promoting the preservation of our cultural heritage and ensuring access to information in a usable and trustworthy form. ALA affirms that the preservation of library resources protects the public’s right to the free flow of information as embodied in the First Amendment to the Constitution and the Library Bill of Rights."
