California State Documents Depository System

The California state depository system was established in 1945. It requires the State Printer to print sufficient copies of state publications to distribute to state depository libraries. Currently, there are 102 state depository libraries. Published since 1947, California State Publications (CSP) is a monthly listing of official publications received by the State Library from state agencies. The California State Library (CSL) is the primary cataloger for state government publications and is responsible for classifying state publications according to the CalDocs classification scheme.

California Cataloging Resources

The document California Documents Classification Scheme (CalDocs) explains the classification scheme and includes lists of standard classification cutter or book numbers used (e.g., for California counties, California state parks, and categories of government documents, like annual or biennial reports, handbooks, newsletters, etc.). The book California State Publications: Manual for Acquisition, Processing, Use is the predecessor to California Documents Classification Scheme.

The book California Blue Book 1850 - 2000 lists the officeholders in all branches of California state government from 1850-2000. It is available from the Secretary of the Senate's Office, State Capitol, Rm 305, Sacramento, CA 95814, (916) 651-4171 or email: bernadette.mcnulty@sen.ca.gov.
